The Arts

Art has always been central to Caroline’s life and Walston, a photography gallery space in a 17th century church in the Scottish Borders, is the realisation of a decades-long dream.

Opening with its first exhibition in October 2026, it is to be a seasonal gallery showcasing local work, emerging British talent and globally renowned photographers.

“Its glorious setting in the Pentland Hills on an ancient site gives Walston’s beautiful space a very special quality.”

Caroline also acts as advisor to portrait painter Binny Mathews.

Binny has painted many distinguished figures, from the Hon. Raymond Seitz, former US Ambassador to the UK to Baroness Stella Rimington, the first woman head of MI5 and John Illsley, base guitarist of Dire Straits. Her work is in many private collections, including Apple and His Majesty King Charles.

“One of Britain’s best portraitists,” Dr Alison Smith, formerly Chief Curator, the National Portrait Gallery, London
